How-Tos: How to find Windows Explorer
Yesterday I explained the existence of Windows Explorer (which is not the same as Internet Explorer, mind you), the Windows file manager that many a novice user has found mysterious, confusing, and just plain hard to find.

How-Tos: How to upgrade a Microsoft Office trial
My Microsoft Windows Vista laptop came preinstalled with a trial version of Microsoft Office 2010, for which I purchased the product code. I now want to buy Microsoft Office Home and Student 2010, but I'm not sure whether I need to buy the boxed version or the product key, or whether I should delete Office 2007 before installing it.

How-Tos: How to set a second hard drive as your PC's primary drive
I added a larger hard drive to my PC and installed a second copy of Vista on it. Wanting to remove the old drive, I've changed the boot priority in the Bios. But Windows still looks for it as the primary drive.

Updating your BIOS can cut boot times, fix compatibility issues, and improve overall performance--or brick your system if you do it wrong.

I'm unable to access the Bios on my Vista PC and instead see a blank screen. I haven't altered any settings, so what could be the problem?

How-Tos: How to fix a PC that shuts down without warning
My Windows 7 64bit desktop PC has started shutting down without warning. Malware scans find nothing and chkdsk is unable to fix the errors that it does find. Short of formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows, what options do I have?

How-Tos: How to import Exif data to jpegs
I've scanned in several thousand slides and negatives in Jpeg format and have stored information about each image in a spreadsheet. Is there an easy way to import this as the Exif information for each photo?
-
How-Tos: How to fix corrupt DLLs in Windows XP
I upgraded my Windows XP PC to Service Pack 3 (SP3). Every time I boot up the PC it asks for my SP3 disc so it can copy files to the DLL cache. I no longer have this – what should I do?

How-Tos: How to fix a system configuration error
I've been trying to dual-boot my Windows 7 PC using Acronis Disk Director 11.0. When I rebooted the PC as prompted, I got an error message reporting a missing ‘hal.dll'. Now, when I try to reboot the PC, it tries to install XP and says a system configuration error has occurred

It takes five minutes to load a web page in Internet Explorer 8.0 on my Windows XP PC. Pages load quickly in Google Chrome, but I prefer Internet Explorer's interface.
-
How-Tos: How to fix corrupt system files
I'm unable to access the right-click menu to delete Jpeg photos in Windows XP, although it works with other file formats. A second Administrator account doesn't suffer from the same problem.

How-Tos: How to get rid of Webtrends Live
Webtrends Live pops up whenever I bank online. The firm's website claims that it only gathers information and isn't malicious, yet several sites claim to remove it if you download their software. Spybot and Norton seem to ignore it, and banning third-party cookies in Firefox makes no difference.

How-Tos: How to alter the size of icons in Windows XP
I have a Linx Net-TV box running on Windows XP and connected to a 40in Sony LCD TV via an HDMI cable. Only the 1280x720 setting provides a proportional picture in fullscreen mode when watching BBC iPlayer and similar TV on-demand services, but this creates an oversized display that's awkward to use for other tasks.

How-Tos: How to fix a conflict between your Windows Firewall and router
I purchased Windows 7 online and have since been getting the error message: ‘To run this application you must first install one of the following versions of .Net Framework v4.0.30319'. When I get online, Internet Explorer tells me ‘Windows can't find a computer or device named http'.

How-Tos: How to fix problems with your PC's Registry
I recently used Registry Repair Pro, CCleaner and Revo Uninstaller to clean out my Windows XP PC. But after defragging the Registry my PC doesn't recognise either my internal or external DVD drive – both are marked in Device Manager with a yellow exclamation mark. I also get Windows hardware device error codes 41 and 19. System Restore won't let me go back far enough to undo the damage.
