How to set the correct text size on your Windows PC or laptop
PC displays come in many different sizes and with varying resolutions, but Windows generally doesn't take into account the physical size of your display when setting font sizes.
This means if you buy a 21.5in display with a 1920 by 1080 pixel resolution, your screen fonts are going to look considerably smaller than on a 27in display with the same number of pixels. In many cases, you may find these fonts to be too small to read comfortably. Sometimes users may be tempted to reduce the display resolution to enlarge the fonts – but on LCD displays this will result in blurry text and greatly reduced image quality.
Windows 8 offers three different pre-set font sizing options. "Smaller – 100%", which is the default; "Medium – 125%", and "Larger – 150%" which give you correspondingly bigger fonts. Changing these settings will also adjust the size of other on-screen items to match the fonts.
You can adjust the setting but opening the Control Panel and clicking on Display.
These options are however rather imprecise. If you have more than one PC, you can set the font sizes accurately and match font sizes between them regardless of the size of the display.
Set screen fonts to match exactly size they would be when printed out
You can set your screen fonts to match exactly the size they would be when printed out.
To do this, you must calculate the resolution of your screen in pixels per inch (PPI) – also sometimes referred to as dots-per-inch (DPI).
To do this, you will need a ruler with inches marked on it. Select the Custom Sizing Options to bring up a picture of a scale in inches. Hold your ruler up to this scale and then drag the scale left or right until it aligns as closely as possible with your ruler. On our display the two scales match at 106%. Now click ok.
You will have to sign out of Windows and back in for the changes to take effect.
