How to find an external device in Windows 7

Locate USB-based items plugged into your PC

Microsoft has slightly changed the way devices are displayed in Windows 7, which may confuse some PC users, especially if they're used to XP. However, fear not. Here's how to locate any device you've plugged into a Windows 7 machine, whether a USB stick, a digital camera or any other type of device using a USB connector, into your machine.

Step one
If you just want to locate the device and view the files or folders store on it (if it's a memory stick etc) then from the Start Menu select Computer. Your devices will be displayed in the window that appears.

Step two
Alternatively, if you want to adjust settings in regards to the device, for example if it's a printer or keyboard, from the Start Menu, select Control Panel. Under Hardware and sound, click View hardware and printers and your devices will be displayed.
