How to fix a PC that shuts down without warning

Fixing sudden shutdowns in Windows 7

QUESTION My Windows 7 64bit desktop PC has started shutting down without warning. Malware scans find nothing and chkdsk is unable to fix the errors that it does find. Short of formatting the hard drive and reinstalling Windows, what options do I have? Bryan John

HELPROOM ANSWER Sudden shutdowns are often a sign of a hardware problem, Bryan. If it were Windows crashing, you'd normally see an error message onscreen before it shuts down.

Contact the manufacturer if your PC is still under warranty. Otherwise, disconnect and reconnect your internal connectors and RAM. Also check for a build-up of dust in and around the processor-cooling fan.
