How to fix desktop icons in Windows 7

Check your AV is Windows 7 compliant

QUESTION My Windows 7 Home Premium PC functions perfectly at startup, but after a while the desktop icons stop working and programs have to be launched from the Start menu. System Restore has no effect. Brian Dawson

HELPROOM ANSWER This is usually caused by a program not being fully Windows 7-compliant. Antivirus software is a common culprit.

Try uninstalling or disabling Startup programs using MSConfig. Go to Start, Search, type msconfig and press Enter.

Click on the Startup tab to find out which programs are running in the background when the PC boots up. Disable any programs you know aren’t built-in Windows processes, such as Explorer, then reboot. Re-enable each program in turn (followed by a reboot) to narrow down which is causing the issue.
