How to stop Facebook videos autoplaying sound

Last August we discovered that Facebook was testing new autoplaying videos with sound. Currently, while videos autoplay by default, the sound is heard only when you open a video. In the new update, which will be rolling out soon, sound from the videos will fade in and out as you scroll through the news feed.

There are two ways to prevent this: firstly by turning your phone on silent or muting the multimedia playback; secondly by disabling the option that will be available in Facebook's settings for ‘Videos in News Feed Start With Sound’.

Step 4. Under General settings look for and select Auto-play. Video Auto-play offers three options: On Mobile Data and Wi-Fi Connections, On Wi-Fi Connections Only and Never Auto-Play Videos. Choose the latter if you don't want video to ever autoplay on Facebook; choose On Wi-Fi Connections Only if you don't like video autoplaying because you're worried about going over your tariff's data allowance.

The same Auto-play menu is found in iOS as it is in Android. Tap on the downward triangle at the top of the News Feed and choose Settings, then Videos and Photos. Choose Auto-Play and select from one of the three options: On Mobile Data and Wi-Fi Connections, On Wi-Fi Connections Only, or Never Auto-play Videos.
