Lots of us have a love/hate relationship with Facebook. It's a great social media site for staying in touch with your friends and it's also great for easily sharing what you're up to in life with hundreds – sometimes thousands – of friends in an instant. However, as we all know, the internet is full of creeps and weirdoes, so you may want to make your Facebook account private so just your friends can see what you're posting. Futhermore, you may have some wild stories that you want to share with the majority of your friends, but not your mother/boss - with Facebook privacy settings you can also restrict certain people from seeing specific posts. We'll also show you how to do that below.
How to make your Facebook account private
The only way to make your Facebook account completely private - as in no one can see it at all - is to delete or deactivate it. If this is what you need or want to do, then we'd recommend temporarily deactivating it as it's the quickest and easiest way to stop other people viewing your profile.
To temporarily deactivate your account all you need to do is select the settings cog in the top right of the window, and then open the Security tab. On this page you will see ‘Deactivate your account' written in blue as the very last option on the page. Simply click on this and you have temporarily deactivated your account.
If that is a bit too drastic for your needs, then you will need to spend a couple of minutes changing a few settings in your account. Don't worry though, follow these steps and you will make your Facebook account private.
How to make your Facebook account private: Step one
The first and most important thing that you are going to need to do is log into to Facebook. Once you've done that click on the settings cog from the top right corner of the window – from here you need to click on the Timeline and Tagging option.
Now that you're here you can control everything with regards to who gets to post and tag on your Timeline and also who can see it. The best way to make your Timeline private is to go through all seven options on offer and tailor them to you wishes. Activating Timeline review is also recommended.
Once you've done this you should have Timeline that is only viewable to people who you want to look at it.
How to make your Facebook account private: Step two
The next step to making your profile private is to go to the Privacy tab in the setting page. From here it's very much the same process as above. Facebook offers you several different options so you can adjust exactly how private you want to be.
Note: when offered the option ‘custom' you can block individuals from seeing your future posts without defriending them by simply type their names into the box provided.
