How to shoot in black and white

Digital photography for beginners

Shooting in black and white can add drama to a rugged landscape or a sense of tranquility to a beach scene. Some digital cameras come with a black-and-white filter, but it's better to shoot in colour then change the results to monochrome later. It's a quick, simple process.

Step 1

Open your photo in Photoshop Elements. Go to Enhance, Adjust Color, Adjust Hue/Saturation and drag the saturation slider to -100. For more control, click on Master and scroll down to select colours one by one before moving the slider. We've left a hint of cyan in the picture to lift the water.
