How to fit a hard drive in a SATA drive bay

What to do when a new hard drive doesn't appear

QUESTION My HP dv9700 Vista laptop has a spare SATA drive bay. A 500GB Hitachi drive has been fitted using the correct caddy and connector, but when I reboot the PC, the drive doesn't appear in Computer. When connected using USB it appears as drive F. Alan Huntley

HELPROOM ANSWER You must first enable the SATA interface in the Bios. Documentation is pretty scarce on Bios features related to this, but suggests that 500GB 2.5in drives are supported only where two 250GB drives are combined in a Raid array. To get access to your new drive you may have to install the latest Bios – version F.59 (released in December 2008) is available at hp.com/uk.
