Smartphones have a screen timeout built into them, which works in the same way as a screen saver on your PC, temporarily suspending the screen or making it appear black while the device is not being used. This is a great function, as it ensures the display isn't draining your handset's battery.
Adjust how quickly your screen fades to black
However, you may find the default timeout period on your BlackBerry may be just a little too quick, and you find your display is timeout while you're still using the handset, or its just simply too long and your display is remaining active and drinking your power when it needn't be.
Fear not, there is a way to alter the default to a timeout period that suits you better. While you can't specify your own unique timeout period (for example 32 seconds) you will be able to choose from increments, which in the case of the most BlackBerry smartphones range from10 seconds to two minutes.

Here's how to adjust the screen timeout period on a BlackBerry running BBOS 6 or above.
Step one
From the Home screen select Options
Step two
Choose Display from the list of options you're presented with and select Screen Display.
Step three
Scroll down to Backlight Timeout and choose the timeout period you require. Then press Menu followed by Save.
It's worth noting if you have a device running BBOS 5 or below, you'll need to select Screen/Keyboard from the Options menu to access the Backlight timeout function, as there isn't a Display menu on this version of the OS.
