QUESTION In a recent story you said Annex M could increase ADSL 2+ broadband upload speeds at the expense of download speeds. I use Slingbox to stream UK TV programmes to my daughter who lives in France, but my average upload speed of 0.37 megabits per second (Mbps) is inadequate for streaming fast-moving action, such as football. I'd be happy to sacrifice some of my 6Mbps download speed to improve quality at her end. How can I do this? Douglas Low
HELPROOM ANSWER The technology that enables this is initiated at the local exchange, and not all exchanges are Annex M-capable yet. You will need to contact BT and ask whether it offers this service in your area. Note, however, that BT currently charges ISPs £7 for this service; the cost to users is likely to be higher.
BT sees this service as primarily of interest to business users who require better VoIP, video-conferencing and virtual private network access. It sounds ideal for your needs, but BT has yet to confirm whether it will offer the service to home users.
