Go to www.1and1.co.uk and click on Hosting. Find a package that suits your needs – we chose Home – and sign up. You will be asked to choose a domain name. To discover whether it’s available, click Check Domain. If you can’t get a .co.uk domain with your name, .me.uk or .org.uk may be free.
Check the terms and conditions, click Continue to go ahead and buy your domain and choose a password to access the 1&1 Control Panel. When your customer number arrives and your domain is registered (this takes up to 24 hours), sign in to the Control Panel at admin.1and1.co.uk.
Go to Websites & Applications and select WebsiteBuilder. Click Create to launch the tool. Choose a website name and a domain it will be associated with, selecting the domain you set up earlier. Our sample site is pcadvisor-test.co.uk. Right now there’s not a lot to see, but it’s live if you want to follow the project.
In the Projects overview of the WebsiteBuilder you’ll be able to give your website some form and shape, specifying the number of pages and the template design, and get a preview of how it looks. If the Website Settings wizard doesn’t launch automatically, you may need to open it from the Help menu and/or allow pop-ups.
You’ll be prompted for some descriptive text for the Browser Title that will appear at the top of every page as well as for a slogan and some footage text such as your contact details. Then click Next to move on to adding styles and colours to your site, based around a preset palette.
You may want to include a logo. Browse to your company or personal logo and click to select it. It will be resized to 209x39 pixels so you may want to crop it first. The 1&1 Home package also lets you house a photo gallery on your site. Save your work and close WebsiteBuilder, then open Photo Gallery and click to create an album.
Now we can choose suggested web pages from a list of relevant categories. We’ve chosen pages from the Personal section including Digital Photography, Music and Films and Video. Once you’ve selected your categories, click Next to proceed to the next step, which is to start adding content.
From within the WebsiteBuilder interface you can start to add text by highlighting the text on screen and replacing it with what you want. You can experiment with the font, type size, colour and alignment in the WebsiteBuilder. The web links are already active – just click through to your other web pages to add text to them too.
Name your album and choose the site it should appear on from the list under Instructions for Publishing Album Only. Click on Photo Gallery, Upload Photos and choose the images to upload. In the Photo Gallery you can preview your album, change the display style with the Styles button.
Close the Gallery and launch WebsiteBuilder. To integrate the album within a page click, on the Extras button and choose add Photo Gallery. Once published it will show up the page when you click Publish. Then, type your chosen domain name into a web browser and you’ll see the finished article. You now have your own website!
