Thinking about moving to a new property and want to find out how much the council tax will be? Or perhaps you're concerned your property has been classified as the wrong band? Rather than hanging on the end of a telephone speaking to your local authority, there's an online service that'll let you check the band of a property within seconds. Here's how to do it.
Start by visiting the Valuation Office Agency website. Select Council Tax from the tabs at the top of the webpage.
Scroll down and click on Check your band.
Enter your postcode, then press search. If you do not have the full postcode, press Advanced search and then enter the details you do have, such as the address, a partial postcode and even the local authority if you know it. It's worth noting you must enter a postcode, or select a local authority and complete one additional field. Then press Search.
Then results for all the properties with that postcode will be displayed. Scroll through until you find the property you're looking for. The band will be displayed to the right-hand side of it. If you want to find out how much you need to pay in council tax, visit your local authorities website and select the Council Tax section. From here there should be a live to Council tax levels, which will display how much each band has to pay.
