How to purchase an eBook from the Google eBookstore on your PC

Get reading across Android and iOS devices as well as eReaders and your PC

Google launched its eBookstore in the UK in October last year, in a bid to rival Apple and Amazon. eBooks purchased from Google's online store that offers a catalogue of around three million titles can be read either on a device with a browser that is Javascript enable, as well tablet PCs and smartphones running both Google Android and Apple's iOS and even some eBook readers – although Amazon's Kindle is currently excluded from the list of supported devices at present.

Furthermore, Google eBooks are stored online, so you can access and read any of the eBooks you have purchased from any of the compatible devices without the need to install them on the device. It also allows you to carry on reading from where you left off, no matter which device you use.

Here's how to purchase and read a Google eBook on your PC

Step one
Start by opening a browser on your PC and navigating to Google's eBookstore. Browse the bookstore for the eBook that you require and click on it.

Step two
As well as reading reviews of the book and viewing a sample chapter, you can also download it by pressing the Get it now button to the right-hand side of the page. If the book is free, you'll be taken to the sign-in page where you'll need to log in to your Google account or create one if you don't already have one. Alternatively, if it's a paid-for eBook, press Buy Now and you'll be taken to your Google Wallet home page where you can pick which credit/debit card you'd like to pay for it with. If you haven't already set-up a Google Wallet account, read our How to create and manage a Google Wallet account article.

Step three
The book will now be added to your My Google eBook account, which can be accessed by visiting Google's dedicated link. You can either visit your eBook account to access all your eBooks, or click Read the book to begin reading your eBook on your PC.

Step four
To skip backwards and forwards through pages simply use the slider bar at the bottom o f the screen. You can also adjust the line height and text size and font using the Settings icon at the top right-hand corner of the window. Meanwhile the magnifying glass icon lets you search the book for a particular phrase or word. When you have finished reading simply close the browser. Thanks to the sync, next time you open the eBook again, no matter on which device, it will begin in the place you left off.
