How to stop automatic photo-tagging on Facebook

Opt-out of using Tag Suggestions

Facebook has recently come under fire for rolling out Tag Suggestions, an automatic photo-tagging tool, to its users without alerting them first.

The technology, which was initially only made available in the US last year, uses face recognition software to look through your current photos and will match people in new photos you upload to those who you have already tagged. However, its automatic, so you need to opt-out if you don't want the service to scan your images and identify your friends. Here's how to do it.

Step one
Log into your Facebook profile, and then from the Account tab in the top right-hand corner select Privacy Settings.

Step two
Select Customise Settings and scroll down to the section labelled Things others Share and press Edit Settings next to Suggest photos of me to friends.

Step three
In the window that appears, the feature will either be Enabled or Disabled. If Enabled, press the button and select Disabled from the drop down menu. Then press OK. Facebook will no longer be able to identify you when friends upload images of you.
