How to access Facebook using a secure connection

Use HTTPS to browse in safety

Facebook has improved user account security by providing the option to access the social network through a secure HTTPS connection. With more and more of us using Wi-Fi hotspots to access social networks, this secure mode is a useful means to protect our information.

Step one: Log into your Facebook account and click the Account menu in the top right corner. Select ‘Account Settings’ from the drop-down menu. In the next screen, select the option to 'Change' next to ‘Account security’.

Step two: Two security options will appear, and neither are selected by default. To access Facebook using a secure HTTPS connection, select the first box. Facebook has also added an option that lets you request notification when an unrecognised device or computer accesses your account. To invoke this option, select the second box. Click Save.

Step three: Having requested notification of unusual access to your account, it's worth checking whether other devices are already accessing your profile. As before, click 'Change' next to 'Account security', then scroll down to Account activity. Facebook attempts to pinpoint the location and device type from which your account was last accessed. If you don't recognise any device listed here, click 'End activity'.

Step four: To confirm that you are now browsing Facebook using a secure connection, check the address bar at the top of the page. Instead of http://www.facebook.com you should now see https://www.facebook.com.

Step five: Note that some third-party applications such as games require access to your account details and will request that you terminate the secure connection and continue with a regular connection. If you choose to 'Continue', the secure HTTPS connection will be restored upon your next login.
