Before you start recording, you'll need to plan out what you're going to say. It's worth writing a script, even if you just outline areas you want to talk about - your memory is likely to go blank otherwise. Now find a quiet room and a suitable microphone, such as the one in the kit above.
Step 1
Next you need to get hold of a suitable audio editing program - in this walkthrough we're using Audacity, a free, reliable and simple application. Download it from here,, then run the setup wizard and install the program. Once this process is completed, start Audacity and you're ready to go.
Step 2
Hit the red record button and start speaking into the microphone, talking slowly and clearly. Hit stop (the yellow button) when you've finished. Audacity has created an audio track of your speech, with sounds displayed as blue waveforms. Press the green play button to hear the recording.
