How to watch US Netflix in the UK - access content not available in UK

Netflix is one of the best TV- and movie-streaming services, but those in America get more and better content than us in the UK. That's not fair, but there is a workaround. (Admittedly, Netflix would prefer there wasn't, but the VPNs and the users are fighting back.) Here's how to get US Netflix in the UK on almost any device, including Xbox, PlayStation, iPad and Apple TV.

However, you should proceed with some caution. Read on to find out why and more instructions on how to get US Netflix in the UK.

For a long time, using a VPN was all you needed to do to get US Netflix in the UK, but Netflix has begun banning VPNs and proxies so some might not work for everyone and may stop working in the future.

Step 2 of 6:

Following news that Netflix would band UK users getting US Netflix using a VPN or proxy to "respect and enforce content licensing by geographic location", Netflix has begun enforcing the ban on many popular VPN services that are having to continually determine workarounds. This means that the services mentioned in this article may temporarily stop working from time to time as Netflix catches up to them.

Netflix doesn't say that people using VPNs or proxies will have their accounts banned, but only that they will be limited to watching content available in their own country. However, Netflix has changed its terms and conditions to state "You also agree not to: circumvent, remove, alter, deactivate, degrade or thwart any of the content protections in the Netflix service," and "We may terminate or restrict your use of our service, without compensation or notice if you are, or if we reasonably believe that you are (i) in violation of any of these Terms of Use or (ii) engaged in illegal or improper use of the service."

This has implications on those using VPNs to 'virtually cross borders' and means you access US Netflix from the UK at your own risk.

There are legitimate licensing reasons as to why Netflix serves up different content in different territories, but there are also fears that by blocking VPNs and preventing UK users to access US content it will push them toward the temptation of illegally downloading that content via The Pirate Bay or similar instead.

Step 3 of 6:

Now you've read all the warnings, it's up to you whether you still want to watch US Netflix in the UK. The workaround works only on PCs, Macs and Android tablets – not with the iPad, iPhone, PS3 or TV sets or services (for info on how to watch US Netflix on these devices skip to the last slide in this article).

Assuming you do, the first step is to download a VPN to your computer (some are browser plugins rather than apps, but they all work in very similar ways). Here, we are using NordVPN as an example because it is the number one VPN service in our VPN review chart.

Go to NordVPN's website and click Get VPN Now. There are three versions available, with the cheapest costing $5.75 month if you commit to a year. Alternatively, you can choose to opt for a one month plan for $11.95. There is a 30 day money back guarantee available too.

Once you've signed up and downloaded and installed the app, you'll need to launch the app on your computer or device.

Step 4 of 6:

Once the app is open, you'll need to connect to the country you're trying to trick Netflix into thinking you're in. In this case, you want to choose US. You can do so by navigating to the US on the Map view and choosing a pin in the US, but a simpler method is to click 'list' and choose US from there.

Step 6 of 6: How to get US Netflix on Xbox, PlayStation, Apple TV, iPad, Android and more

If you want to get US Netflix on your Xbox or PlayStation then you will need to fiddle with some DNS settings. If you head to the network settings of the console/device and manually configure the settings then you can enter a primary and secondary DNS (Domain Name Servers) numbers.

You can search the internet for these (they change fairly regularly) and DroidKit has a good list which you can try. They are free but get easily clogged up and slow and occasionally send you to someone's own site rather than Netflix in an attempt to sell you VPN software or worse.

You can also try ExpressVPN, which offers capabilities for consoles as well as apps and set-top boxes. If you have trouble connecting via ExpressVPN you can get in touch with its 24/7 customer support team who'll advise you which server to connect to (they'll respond within minutes). It's constantly changing in the Netflix cat and mouse game so the company is unable to publish information on which servers are working at any one time.
