Windows 8 video app of the week: 4oD

4oD allows you to watch not only current shows, but also TV programmes from Channel 4's vast archive

Watching TV on your laptop has become much more popular over the years. The convenience of having your favourite programmes available anywhere and the ability to tweet or work as you watch are great features. Windows 8 has opened up a host of possibilities for watching TV on the go and there are lots of new companies distributing TV apps, but still some of the very best are from the channels we know and love.

4oD is from Channel Four and allows you to watch not only current shows, but also TV programmes from its vast archive going back to include shows that aren’t even on anymore. So, if you fancy re-watching the first series of Teachers or never got to see the early seasons of Shameless then this app will give you access to all this and more. No need to wait for the shows to be repeated and all available twenty-four hours a day seven days a week.

The 4oD app shows recommendations for you and allows you to catch-up on programmes shown in the last 30 days on Channel 4. E4 and More4. If you’re not sure what show you want to watch there are categories to choose from to help you narrow down your options. You can select from comedy, drama, factual and more. Should you know precisely which show it is you’re after there’s an A-Z listing as well.

If you’re worried about giving your kids access to the app there are parental controls that allow you to require a pin code for any content rated for 16+ or 18+ audiences.

When you’ve found the show you want watching it couldn’t be easier, simply click, or tap if you have a touch screen laptop, on the show and sit back as the programme is beamed direct to your screen. Perhaps best of all this service is completely free of charge. There are adverts to sit though, but this is a small price to pay for the access to an impressive back catalogue of shows and catch-up options on recently aired shows.
