QUESTION My Windows XP-based AMD PC has a corrupt usbehci.sys file and I can’t get the USB port to work. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and rebooting the PC. The driver installs but the port still refuses to work. Windows reports that it can’t find a better match for the hardware. Aside from a message that the driver isn’t Windows XP logo-certified, I can find no obvious cause. Richie Kitchener
HELPROOM ANSWER The usbehci.sys file is a Windows system file, which is why replacing or repairing the USB drivers isn’t fixing the issue. Get the file back using System Restore. Go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore and follow the wizard to roll back your computer to a time prior to when the error began to occur. If this doesn’t work, try to get the file from the Windows XP SP3 download and use that to replace the corrupt version. Download the file and, using a program such as WinZip, extract the files to a separate folder. You can then navigate to foldername/i386/ and look for the file named ‘usbehci.sy_’. Right-click it, rename it usbehci.sys and then copy it to a safe location, such as the root of the C drive in a folder called ‘New File’.
Boot into Safe mode by pressing F8 during startup. Once Windows has loaded, navigate to C:\Windows\System32\Drivers. Delete the old usbehci.sys file, copy over your new version and reboot the PC. This should then fix your problem.
If the problem remains, reinstalling Windows is likely to be the quickest way of solving your problem, as it may indicate a deeper fault.
