QUESTION My desktop PC immediately shuts down after I turn it on. At the second attempt it will stay switched on, but nothing appears onscreen. The processor fan is running and the RAM is okay, but the motherboard LED blinks. Ashwin Shetty

HELPROOM ANSWER The blinking light on the motherboard suggests you have a hardware problem, Ashwin. My guess is the motherboard has ‘blown’, since the continuous power on the second boot indicates a steady power flow from the power supply unit (PSU). To be sure, unplug the PC from the mains, earth yourself, then disconnect the internal components. Remove the RAM before reconnecting them. Power up the PC.

If the problem continues, you’ll need to have the motherboard repaired or replaced.
