Black borders on external monitor

Does your graphics card think your monitor is a PC

If you are seeing a black border around your PC content, it is likely that your graphics card thinks the screen is a TV. It's easy to solve: our Helproom Editor explains how. Updated 17 December 2012.

QUESTION I've recently bought a 24in display for my PC which I'm using via an HDMI connection. When I plug it in I get a 1920 x 1080 image on the screen, but it has a large black border all around the edge which I simply can't get rid of. Can you help?

HELPROOM ANSWER This sounds like you're using an AMD Radeon graphics card and the picture is being automatically scaled for a TV. To fix the problem, right-click on the desktop and select the topmost item "Catalyst Control Center". If this option doesn't appear, then you may need to install the latest graphics drivers which can be downloaded from http://support.amd.com/us/gpudownload/Pages/index.aspx.

In the Catalyst Control Center, select "My Digital Flat-Panels" and then "Scaling Options (Digital Flat-Panel)". Now move the slider from Underscan to Overscan to remove the black borders.

QUESTION I followed your instructions in the previous issue for removing the black border around the edge of my desktop when using my AMD Radeon HD 4000 graphics card, but I’ve now upgraded to Windows 8 and the Catalyst driver doesn’t run on the new operating system. The built-in Microsoft driver works, but doesn’t give me the option to adjust the overlay. What can I do?

HELPROOM ANSWER AMD has more recently made available a legacy driver for Windows 8, which will enable the Catalyst Control Center and allow the overscan setting on older graphics cards to be adjusted. You can download it from tinyurl.com/d4znggj.
