How to use an iPhone as a Wi-Fi hotspot: configuring Personal Hotspot

Connect a tablet or laptop to the internet via your iPhone

Depending on your mobile operator and tariff, you might be able to share your iPhone's internet connection with other devices, such as an iPad (or other tablet) and a laptop.

This means a Wi-Fi only iPad will be able to access the internet on the move.

Assuming your contract allows tethering, you'll be able to turn your iPhone 4, 4S or 5 into a portable Wi-Fi hotspot.

Here's how to set it up.

Ste p 1: On your iPhone, tap Settings, then General. You should see Personal Hotspot in the list just as in the image below. It looks very similar if your phone is running iOS 5. If you can't see it, you should call your mobile provider to find out why. It may be that you can add tethering for an extra fee.

Step 2: Tap Personal Hotspot and you'll see a screen similar to the one below. It's simply a case of sliding the switch to ON and making a note of the network name (the name of your iPhone) and the Wi-Fi password.

Step 3: On your tablet or laptop, make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and search for wireless networks. Select the one that matches your phone's name (in this example, Karen's iPhone) and then enter the password.

Once you're connected, you can browse the internet, download files, stream video and more. Be careful, though, as you can quickly eat up your monthly data allowance.
