How-Tos: How to initialise your PC's microphone
My Windows 7 PC plays audio through headphones but is unable to pick up sound from them. I’ve got a Creative SoundBlaster X-Fi card and a Logitech USB phone/microphone. The drivers are up to date.

How-Tos: How to set your PC's default search engine & web browser
I recently installed the free email client Incredimail. It works fine but, on downloading an update, it has taken over Google Chrome, Firefox and my other internet browsers. When I try to open them via their desktop shortcut icons or the Programs menu, up pops the My Start by Incredimail page and a message stating that what I’ve tried to open isn’t my default browser. Clicking on ‘Make this my default browser’ doesn’t change things.

How-Tos: How to install Windows 7 on a Vista laptop
I’m about to replace my Vista Home Premium laptop with one running Windows 7. I’ll be passing on my old laptop to my son, but I’d like to install Windows 7 on his laptop too. Can I purchase an upgrade version, and will I lose any programs or other files in doing so? What’s my best (cheapest) option?
-
How-Tos: How to uninstall troublesome software
I installed System Mechanic from a recent PC Advisor cover DVD. Its Windows installer pops up whenever I turn on my machine and seems to think there’s a CD in the drive when there isn’t. I can disable it using the Services (local) shortcut, and have to go through this process every time I restart. I don’t have an external backup to copy files to, and I’m not confident enough to reinstall Windows.

How-Tos: How to fix a Windows startup error
When I power on my Windows XP Pro Lenovo laptop I get the error message: ‘Windows did not start successfully. This could be due to software or hardware change’. It then gives options to start in Safe mode or Recovery, or to Start normally after 10 seconds. Whichever option I choose, the screen goes black and the power switches off by itself. I've tried restoring the machine to its factory settings, but the same problem occurs repeatedly.

How-Tos: How to replace a corrupt Windows system file
My Windows XP-based AMD PC has a corrupt usbehci.sys file and I can’t get the USB port to work. I’ve tried uninstalling and reinstalling the driver and rebooting the PC. The driver installs but the port still refuses to work. Windows reports that it can’t find a better match for the hardware. Aside from a message that the driver isn’t Windows XP logo-certified, I can find no obvious cause.
-
How-Tos: How to set the correct time and date on Outlook emails
Sent messages from my Outlook Express account are being dated four days prior to their actual date of sending and filed in the Sent Items with the faulty date on them. The recipients then overlook the messages as they don’t appear at the top of their email pile.

How-Tos: How to use a 64-bit web browser
My Windows 7 laptop has icons for both 32bit and 64bit Internet Explorer. I have no problems using the 32bit version, but the 64bit software wants to install Adobe Flash Player every time I visit a news site. If I click on the yellow bar at the top of the window and accept the installation, nothing happens. I’m confused about 64bit and its benefits if it won’t work with some websites.
-
How-Tos: How to change your web browser's home page
I have a shortcut on my desktop that’s supposed to launch my web browser and navigate to my ISP’s home page, sky.com. When I click on it, an error message reports: ‘could not locate internet’. My PC launches Internet Explorer, but I have to manually browse to the ISP’s website. I haven’t knowingly changed any settings.
