i cannot install firefox [first thing ive tried] on windows 7,
comes up in a box with 'run as' in the title and says
'you may not have the necessary permissions... ' then asks to instal as administrator, asking for a password, or as me
im stuck!

Disabling the UAC should help.
Control Panel > User Accounts, click the Change User Account Control settings. Move the arrow thingy to 'Never notify'. G

Installing firefox on windows 7 error
Hi AL7 Have you tried uninstalling Firefox and then reinstalling ? It may be that you have a corrupt file and it may be partly installed and not allowing you to fully install. Personally that is what I would do. Remove via add/remove programs and then go the Mozilla/Firefox homepage and download the latest version 3.5.3 - Save to Desktop then right click and Run as Administrator. If you have problems uninstalling download and run "Windows install clean up" from the following LINK click here
