I have a HP 2420n which is currently networked via Sharing from the PC it is directly connected to. Obviously this PC has to be "on" to enable other family members to print.
Is there a set up to allow the other users to print without having to switch the main PC on.
Thanks
p.s i'm using Win7

1. Unplug the USB cable and get an ethernet cable click here ,plug one end into a spare LAN port on the router and the other into the Lan port of the printer.
2. On each PC you want to print from the HP,rerun the driver again but this time use the "Wired or wireless connection" instead of the USB one.You might have to configure the firewall if your PCs can't find the HP.
3. If you don't have the driver CD in hand then you can download drivers from click here . The installation of XP & Vista drivers are stright forward however Win7 is slightly different since most HP drivers are integrated.
You have to install thru' Add printer within Devices & Printers and let windows scan, however if you don't see your HP (2420n)listed then it may not be supported under Win7.
In that case just download the Vista driver(or XP one to test which one will work) instead and click "Have disk",and let windows install.(In most cases it still will work under differnt driver)
Full installation information is available on the support page.
4. After correct installation,as long as the router and printer are both on,no main PC has to be on in order to let other PCs print.

You cannot just connect a Printer to a Router, You need a Ethernet Printer Server
