Hi,
I rebuilt my computer on Saturday. I added a 15gb hard drive to my girlfrind's old motherboard and processor, then added my AGP graphics card, firewire PCI card, RAM, and a new SATA hard drive which is attached to a PCI RAID controller. I also added my girlfriend's old sound card.

I installed windows on the 15gb drive, and have managed to get most things up and running properly.

However, I have had major problems with the internet and sound card.

I went on another forum and was advised to download a program called belarc, which scans your computer - here's the results......

I've tried installing the drivers for the motherboard, the built-in sound card and the extra sound card, but to no avail.

I managed to solve the internet problem by running a program called "Winsockfix". However, while surfing the internet my computer froze. I restarted it, but now it freezes at the windows start-up screen every time.
I've tried logging in in safe mode, but it freezes.
I've tried logging in using the last known settings that worked, it freezes.
I've tried logging on normally, it freezes.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

disable on-board sound in BIOS

When you fitted the sound card, did you disable on board sound from the BIOS first.
Is the sound card fitted correctly into the PCI slot.

I haven't disabled on board sound in the BIOS, I'll have a look when I get home from work.
The sound card is fitted correctly in the PCI slot, but the computer hasn't been finding it.

Any ideas why it's not getting past the windows screen when I'm booting up?

Is your PSU up to the job? That's quite a lot of kit

it's a 2.25 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP, would that be ok?

PSU=Power supply unit. How many watts is it rated at? Disconnect all but one HD and optical drive and see if it works.

I'll give it a try when I get back from work. It was working fine, but I'll give it a go. Cheers!

remove card

is the card fitted when the computer 'it's not getting past the windows screen when I'm booting up?.

If yes,remove and try without

I'll try that as well, thanks!

Thanks a lot guys!
I unplugged everything except for the drive windows is on and it started fine, guessing I need a new PSU.

I've also taken the additional sound card out as it wasn't being detected by the computer, restarted and then enabled my on-board sound card (bloody thing's never gonna work if it's disabled is it!!) which is working fine now.

Problem solved, thanks again!!

Hi guys, back again!!
I bought a new 600w PSU to replace the 400w PSU I had before. I used an online power consumption calculator (can't remember where from off the top of my head), typed in all the components I have installed and it said my power consumption was about 350w, so I thought 600w would be more than enough.

I plugged the 500gb IDE and new 750gb SATA drive back in and had the same problem, stalling on the windows start up screen.
I tried unplugging the IDE drive, and the computer loaded up but wouldn't find the SATA drive. It's finding the PCI RAID card, just not the drive.

Anyone got any ideas on how to fix this? I'm getting quite worried, as when it did find the SATA drive (before it froze) I copied all of my music across to it - I don't want to lose all of my tunes!

Doubel check

the lead again and try to find out what is the correct wattage to use and see if that helps.

Unplug it first and double chek the connections.

The only query i have is why one sata nd one ide should'nt u be using tow satas or two ide's. i might be rwong and may be you can correct me but i remebr reading that de and sata wont transfr info between each other becsue of the format of the drives.

The reason for 1 SATA and 2 IDE's is that I had the IDE's before and wanted to add more memory, as well as a faster drive.
I have just windows installed on a 15GB IDE drive, the 2nd (500GB) IDE drive was my additional storage drive previously. I then added the 750GB SATA drive, connecting it via a PCI RAID card.

The drives were all working fine with each other, until I fixed the internet problem. While I was online my computer froze, so I restarted it. Since then it hasn't found the SATA drive, and wouldn't load up windows with the SATA+2nd IDE drive attached.
With the new PSU it will load up with the SATA drive connected, but won't find it. It won't load up with the SATA+2nd IDE drive though.

The PCI RAID card has 2 SATA ports, neither of these work.

Any ideas?

Try this

I'm not an expert with RAID set ups,but you could go into the BIOS and changed the SATA connection to IDE.Your OS should see the all the HDDS as IDE

Because you have 1 SATA and 2 IDE's,perhaps the PC is hanging because its unsure which drive to boot from.

With SATA, you connect your HDD to the first SATA port, its either called 0 or 1.Your IDE HDD will also try and boot if connected to the first IDE port.Check the boot order in the BIOS,change the order and see if it makes a difference.

Personally I wouldn't mix SATA and IDE HDD.

To retrieve your music, you could run a live CD version of Linux, this will give you access to the files.

Hope this help???

Somebody suggested I install windows on the SATA drive and get rid of the 15GB IDE drive completely. If I do this will it erase all of the music on my SATA drive? There's a good 500GB of free space on there, I just don't want to wipe all of my tunes!

When I load windows with the SATA drive connected at the moment it goes really slowly, but shows that the drive is connected. But, if you look in the BIOS it doesn't seem to be finding it. Unless I'm looking in the wrong place/for the wrong thing? If it's not finding it in the BIOS am I going to be able to install windows on it?

SATA

If you want to save your music, you could always buy an external HDD caddy ,and copy the tracks to another PC,then format and use the SATA drive. Can you copy the tracks to the 15GB IDE drive??

If the SATA HDD is recognized,it should be shown on the POST screen. Is the SATA HDD, SATA OR SATA 2.Is it connected to the first SATA port on the MB?.

If I buy an external caddy can I literally just plug the drive in and it'll work, or would I need to format it beforehand?

There's over 100GB of music on there, no way it'll fit on the IDE!

I think it's SATA 2. There's no SATA connections on the MB, it's connected to a PCI RAID card.

Caddy

When I have fitted internal HDD's into caddys,XP has recognized it has an external drive.

No format was required,(as long as it already has a file management system),NTFS or FAT,high level format.

But be careful, sometimes things never go as planned with PC's.....Your decision

Like I said I'm not an expert with RAID,there are forum members out there who could help with this.

Personally I would use the SATA as an external drive, and use internal IDE drives only.

Does your PC have USB 2.0 ????

The SATA drive's formatted as NTFS so sounds like it should be ok.

Would my system run any faster if I had windows and all of my software running from the SATA drive, or would it not make any difference?

If it doesn't make any difference then I'll just get an external SATA caddy.

If it would run faster I think I'll get an external caddy for the 500gb IDE drive, then have the SATA drive as the only internal hard drive.

Apparently, I can install windows on the SATA drive without having to format it.
I've been told "When you select the partition to install to, tell the installer to "Leave the current file system in tact" It'll then install alongside your tunes."
Would this definitely work, or would I end up wiping all of my music?

SATA

SATA is faster then IDE.I only use SATA.

I thought the only way you could keep your files and apps was to repair XP.

A repair install should keep all of your music and apps, but I cant guarantee it will.

I would use a caddy for you HDD with the music,if you really want SATA,you could buy another SATA HDD,and action a new install with format.
