I would like to buy a book for Windows 8 I was wondering do you think this will be of no use if I update to Win 8.1, I am talking about Mirocsoft hard back book for Win 8

I am sure that you will get a number of different views on this but my personal opinion is that a book about Windows 8 or 8.1 is a waste of money. You can get to know all the basics about how to operate it from a simple Google Search. Start with this and then progress to these tutorials it's all free and you will learn by doing.
