Windows update causes computer to crash (Windows7)

The October windows update caused trouble:- It wouldn't even configure the updates but hung on one. I tried to switch off (after several hours), but it still didn't do that. I had to remove the battery from my laptop. I have tried various fixes to no avail :- Fixit itself, sfc/scannow; Unfortunately I don't have any recent restore points. I don't even have the codes for the updates, but am aware that others have had trouble too. The few times I though I was winning the programs were very slow or didn't work either. Switching off into hibernation mode took a very long time. Any ideas?
