Media centre in windows 8

I have just bought a new computer and am dismayed to see that Windows 8 does not have media centre or a facility for recording TV programs. I have a TV tuner built in. Do I really have to update to Windows 8 Pro and then buy a copy of media centre to put me back where I was on my previous computer with Windows 7. Is there any chance that the upgrade of Windows 8 due on 17th October will include media centre??? Thanks in advance...........Tony S.

When W/8 pro came out at first we could download the media center for free not sure if you can still get it free.

If you had a serial number for it on W/7 maybe you could have transferred it to W/8.

Anyhow found this which is probably no good to you.

Just in case you were thinking of shifting I do not think that you still get it free with the Pro version. I am sure someone will be able to give you the information that you need.

If you have bought a new computer with a TV tuner built in you should also have a program to use the TV tuner if not contact the retailer you purchased the computer from.

Thanks for prompt responses. The TV tuner does work to show all TV channels but the record facility is missing in Windows 8, without seemingly buying and installing Windows 8 Pro and also buying Media Centre separately. Seems to be a rip-off to me!! I used media cemtre consistently on Windows 7 on my old computer as it was included from the start.Windows 8 Pro is £99 (in USA it is $99!!! ) and media centre is about £7 extra. I see it may be cheaper on Amazon but it still annoys.

Some free alternatives here. I haven't used any of them so I can't recommend which one to try.

I downloaded Media Portal but cannot get it to configure or start up. I have emailed them and await their reply.

Have you followed the Wiki installation and setup user guide?

Personally I could never get on with MediaPortal and always preferred XBMC which I use at the moment until MediaBrowser3 is ready, just waiting for MediaBrowser Theatre to be released. Think your best option would be MediaBrowser3 to be honest . The only issue with XBMC is that you have to install add-ons to get the TV side such as the EPG and Scheduler to work

have a look here

for MediaPortal click here here for XBMC click here here for MediaBrowser / MediaBrowser 3 click here

Thanks again for advice which I am considering whilst waiting to see what the new upgrade for Windows 8 brings on 17th October!

I am also considering creating a partition on my new computer and loading my DVD of Windows 7 as I presume that would bring back media centre for free!!

Trouble is I am nearly 80 years old and whilst reasonably computer literate I worry about blowing the whole process!
