Compatability of gmail and Thunderbird 17?

I've been having trouble logging into Thunderbird (v17.0) to access my gmail account. This has happened before, but this time I've been unable to fix it. (Usually I just change my password.)

I am wondering if there is a compatibility problem between the programs and if so, is there a good fix, or is there an earlier version of Thunderbird that doesn't have these problems?

Regards,

Thanks, Graphicool1, I had tried this, and have tried it again, but must have done something wrong as I'm now getting a page referring to 'Add security exception?' As I don't understand what that means I'm kinda stuck now!
