Perhaps try taking the memory card out and use a card reader to import pics and video. Connecting a camera directly seems to hammer the battery in my experience, on both my Lumix P&S and Nikon DSLR. Having said that, I have an LS85, same vintage as your LZ8 I think - never needed additional software or drivers on Windows 7 or 8. Windows Compatibility Centre doesn't suggest any additional downloads are required

It might be that the PhotoStudio software that the camera came with is not working with Windows 8. Versions here; http://panasonic.net/avc/lumix/popup/operating_environment/index.html

You can try compatibility mode if that's the case. http://www.dummies.com/how-to/content/how-to-run-older-programs-under-windows-8.html

Frankly I never install the software that comes with any device unless I absolutely have to, Windows own capabilities or software I am more familiar with usually work better. A couple of third party suggestions; Google Picasa is excellent for image management (http://picasa.google.com) as is Zoner Photo Studio Free http://free.zoner.com/

Sounds as though incompatible software is being invoked when Autoplay runs - check your Autoplay settings; http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows-8/autoplay-faq

Another compatibility list here; http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/info/windows8.html

According to the site, your camera came with Photostudio 2, and there's no indication it's compatible with Windows 8. The Photostudio 2.1 updated listed at the top of the page I linked to does show Win7/8 compatibility, so perhaps try that if you want to stick with Panasonic's software.
