Desktop icons not responding

All my Internet desktop icons have stopped responding apart from Firefox. I'm not getting any error message, just no response. Firefox works fine. Chrome is set as my default browser but I can't launch it from desktop, task bar or Start menu. Software (MS suite, Adobe, WMP etc open fine). Is this some setting that Firefox has sneaked in under the radar to prevent me using Chrome? I can open IE ok. Wierd. Grateful for any advice to sort this. Cheers Nick
