acer laptop cannot detect wireless network

I have acer laptop running vista up to date with all updates. Suddenly stopped seeing any wireless networks. Has internal atheros ar5007eg wireless adapter. I have updated drivers, it shows in device manager and says device is working but no wireless networks are visable. I bought a netgear n300 usb adapter as a work around and loaded drivers as per setup but then usb cannot be detected. I have tried different usb ports but still the same. Is there something in the laptop that can cause both of these problems. I thought using an external adapter would overcome this but it hasn't. Thank you

You can use Network Diagnostics to help identify the problem - Right click icon on the notification area on the taskbar, then click Diagnose and Repair. Review the options and select the best one available.

Yes I have loaded the correct drivers, I have also tried rolling back to previous driver. I am beginning to suspect the fault lies with the Atheros network adapter itself.

Yes, I am beginning to think the problem lies with the Atheros network adapter but if so why cant I use an external adapter?

I was about to say that - they can and do fail. Sorry but I have to go out now but hopefully someone else will see your problem. Will look again later.
