Several things to suggest

... TRY - start - type in run E:/

... Go to "Device Manager (start and type this in)." Look for "IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers." Right-click on each "IDE channel." Click "uninstall." Do that with all the IDE channels you have. Restart your computer. When it restarts, the computer should install the necessary info.

... Have you tried to restore your system to a date before you applied the updates? If you can do this you can then re-install your updates one by one.

...If this doesn't work ....

You could try a registry edit if you feel able to but PLEASE BE CAREFUL

First of all MAKE A RESTORE POINT - use this article to guide you

Click the Start button, and then in the search box, type regedit.
Press the Enter key.

NOTE: If prompted for an administrator password or a User Account Control prompt is

displayed, type the appropriate password or click Continue. In the Registry Editor window, in the left pane, double-click the HKEYLOCALMACHINE folder.

In the HKEYLOCALMACHINE folder, double-click the System folder.

In the System folder, double-click the CurrentControlSet folder.

In the CurrentControlSet folder, double-click the Control folder.

In the Control folder, double-click the Class folder. In the Class folder, click to select the {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318} folder.

In the right pane, click to select the UpperFilters registry value.

On the menu bar, click Edit.

In the Edit menu, click Delete.

In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click the Yes button.

In the right pane, click to select the LowerFilters registry value.

On the menu bar, click Edit.

In the Edit menu, click Delete.

In the Confirm Value Delete dialog box, click the Yes button.

NOTE: Do not delete the UpperFiltersBak or LowerFiltersBak registry values.

Close the Registry Editor window.

Restart the computer.

Good luck

Have you by any chance just installed a new version of Norton? This is one of the problems that may be caused by doing this apparently. If so you can ring them for support and they have a bug fix which they can put right.

No, I do not use Norton at all. Had already tried system restore to earlier date. Have also tried the regedit route. I'm nervous about deleting the IDE ATAPI - is it safe to do so?

Yes it should be safe but to make doubly sure you could set a restore point - when you re-start the PC will automatically re-install them.

First you could try to reassign a new drive letter:-

Click on the Start button and then choose Control Panel.

Click on the System and Maintenance link.

Note: If you're viewing the Classic View of Control Panel, you won't see this link. Just double-click on the Administrative Tools icon and skip to Step 4.

In the System and Maintenance window, click on the Administrative Tools heading located near the bottom of the window.

In the Administrative Tools window, double-click on the Computer Management icon.

When Computer Management opens, click on Disk Management on the left.

Go into disk management and click on view, then top and graphical. Then you should see the cd drive. Right click on the cd drive and then assign new letter to drive.
