Lost Notification Area

The notification area has disappeared from my taskbar. If I go to the taskbar properties and click "customise" I get a window showing no icons. Clicking "Turn system icons on or off" produces a list of icons but all but the "Clock" icon are shown as "Off" and are grayed out. "Restoring default icon behaviour" has no effect.

Thanks smackheadz but the link solutions didn't work.
However a System Restore did the trick - Restores always failed in Vista and XP so one up to W7.
