Is the bottom half just blank or is it that the visible bit is limited to the size of the window?

Drag the bottom down or better still drag the top right to the top, and it should go to full size

If you drag it back down, you can resize it to the size you want (small) and the back up to full size it will keep those settings

The problem seemed to start after I had tried the side by side option The page now always comes up in that half size no other pages are open

Normally have to enlarge it and the turn it off using the red X it should open fully the next time that you use it.
