Tremendous echo on sounds

Since insstalling W7 I find that all sounds have a tremendous echo. I have tried various avenues to find a setting which could be wrongly set, such as Asus sound effects manager and Sound in Control panel but without success. Any ideas anyone?

I should have confirmed that I meant not just all Windows sounds but all others such as streaming radio, video clips, CDs playing etc.

Problem just went as mysteriously as it came!
