I am setting up a new laptop for a relative with Windows 8 64bit. I am immediately presented with 85 new windows updates. Do I really need all these OR is it wise to install them with it being new?

If you want to update to 8.1 it is recommended that you have the latest updates installed.

And expect it to take an hour at least for that update alone. Not unless of course it came with 8.1 on it.

sunnystaines - Jock1e Thanks for the information. Got all the updates done last night - a few at a time - no problems. Would you advise an update to 8.1 at this stage?

There is actually very little difference that I have noticed. The problem is if you are going to do it eventually it is better that you do it now.

I agree with Jock1e about there being very little difference except for eye candy and security. IE 11 for example. If you are going to do it I would do it now before you set up any more profiles.
