prob lem with windows 8

my wifes notebook screen had a message saying updating it will take 2 days then the screen went to restarting with the circle moving round and that is allit is doing and no matter what we try to do it does not respond and it will not switch off even at the mains any idea what's happening

Hold the start button down and it should switch off in about 6 seconds.
Switching the mains off at the mains will do no good as it will work on battery power.

"updating it will take 2 days"
The updater makes a calculation, based on the download rate applying at the time. The update period normally changes rapidly, once the download gets under way - no update will take 2 days to download and install. Often, if a machine hasn't been used or updated for some time there will be a large amount of data to download, and this can extend the update time.
Keep trying, and make sure that nothing else is running on the computer while the update gets under way.
