Have loaded Windows 8 over Windows XP on a little net book computer. Can the folder "Windows.old" be deleted to free up disc space? Or is it necessary in the operation of the new Windows 8 operating system?

Make sure you don't need any docs, photos, music etc. from the old folder first then run Disk Cleanup twice to remove it when ready. More info here.
