Google Maps will not run

Oops, Street View isn't supported in this version of your browser.

To access Street View, open your browser on the desktop, or download Google Chrome.

this is what I get if I try to use Google maps from the desktop. has Google not configured maps for windows 8, or is it because I am on 64bit

Are you using the G Maps App from the store? Street view works OK using that.

cannot find anything about google or maps in my app store

Open the charms bar, select search, type g maps in the box and scroll down to Store. A page will open with a list of about 7. Click on G Maps free and it will take you to the download page.

just Windows 8, never had probs with 7
