Windows 8 ate my programmes

Why does windows 8 make my desktop progs disappear? So far I have lost, and had to re install....Windows Office, One Note, Norton 360, Google Earth and an Astronomy programme I can't find. The Mail 8 prog is quick but basic, too basic. Most of the 'free' apps are littered with adverts and offers of upgrades...at a price. The games in any case are not a patch on the Windows 7 offerings. One Note for example is just a cheapened version of the real thing! The whole thing looks like a tablet programme that some bright spark has said of...."Hey guys, we can save a s*** of money if we run this on all machines! Ha!!!

When I upgraded to Windows 8 only a couple of programs had to be removed. Many of my programs cannot be seen as tiles on the start page, but they are still installed. If I type their name they appear on the left. When they appear you can rightclick on the name and choose to pin to start (which will create a tile) or pin to launch bar.

I also use a dock called rocket dock (that I have located at the top of the screen and it autohides). I add shortcuts to drives, folders, programs etc - the icons that come with it are unattractive, but you can get some good ones online and put them in the rocketdock folder making them easy to change. I certainly find using a dock makes life easier.

To me Windows 8 feels like 2 worlds - the start page tiles and the desktop, which don't feel integrated. However I'm sticking with it for now. I'm enjoying the free card games (freecell, spider etc) but not tried any of the others.

The Windows 8 installer will certainly not remove Microsoft Office,or Google earth,or Norton 360 - I can't comment about the astronomy software. I can't understand why you had to reinstall any of the three I mentioned.

If you have a Microsoft Office installation you will have Outlook for email - you don't need to use Windows mail.
