how do I delete the file WINDOWS.OLD

Having recently upgraded my laptop W7 to W8 I have a file called "windows .old" as this is rather a large file I thought it was possible to delete it, I have tried but it keeps asking me it needs the adminastrator and also the systems permission ?? so will not delete it. can anyone tell me if it is safe to delete, and how to do it. I have all the necessary backups in place should anything go wrong.

Run the disk cleanup utility twice, instructions, make sure you don't need any documents or folders from the Windows old folder first.

how would I know if there is anything I need in the file its huge !!

Explorer, C:\ drive and open the folder. Browse through the tree, you might come across some photos or music you might wish to keep.
