1 DVD drive not recognised

I have two identical dvd drives - TSST Corp SH222 AB. Windows 8 will only detect one. I've tried different SATA ports, cables. I can get it not to recognise any (as shown in Device Manager) if I use certain SATA ports! Each device is recognised in BIOS and each can work in Windows by using certain ports but only one at a time. The MB is a Gigabyte 970A-D3. I've installed the latest MB drivers. Both work fine under Win 7. Any help appreciated.
