Upgrading XP to Win 8 fail safe revert back procedure

If after upgrading from XP to Win 8 I decide to revert back to XP will the following procedure work? Prior to upgrade I make a bootable clone of my main XP hard drive to an external hard drive. Upgrade main XP drive to win 8. To revert to XP, replace main Win 8 hard drive with previously cloned XP external DRIVE. No further action necessary?

Yes that will work but I'd do it differently. Clone the XP drive then swap them over. You now know that both drives work in XP. Upgrade the cloned drive that's now in your PC.
