Failure of install

I have tried 3 times to install W8, twice with the download and once with the disk subsequently received. Each time all goes well (including uninstalling some programs) until we reach the "Getting devices ready" stage, when it never gets beyond 37% and then locks. I don't want to do a clean install and have to reinstall all my programs. Each time I have to use system restore to recover the position and revert to W7. Any suggestions?

Do the clean install that you're trying to avoid, it's easier than the bother you're getting now. As was the case for me too.
