Is the built in windows defender and the built in security into windows 8 any good? Or do I need to install Norton 360 for example? Thanks.

'Yes you need antivirus software'
Not strictly true. Windows 8 has all the security that is necessary.

I'm glad to know that, my Zone Alarm Extreme won't yet work without compatibility issues in W8. So I've been using the Windows security since I installed it.

'I'm glad to know that,'
I checked it out and it gets quite a good review albeit a little slow on doing a full scan.

I have said it before if it was any good Microsoft would be selling it.The first thing I do when I get a new computer is switch Windows defender off in Services.
If you are going to use MSE you need a good Anti-malware program to go with it.
If you bank with Barclays I believe Kaspersky is still free with them.
