Windows 8 and protection advice

I am told that Windows 8 as absorbed Security Essentials therefore no need to install protection software such as Norton's lastest offer - any comments would be most welcome since I am not sure what is best practice.

It's personal preference I think. Defender has anti virus and anti malware. I've tried it but found that full manual scanning takes a while and it updates via Windows updates. It's OK but I've gone back to my free AV and have Malwarebytes.

Hi Rdave13, Thanks many much for your advice, much appreciated. I will wait for a couple of months to see what might/might not happen. I agree with the scan length !!
