Google Chrome Preferences not read

I was recently advised by my Hippo Update Checker that there was a later version of Google Chrome available. Since I was updating several applications, I also updated Chrome. I wish I hadn't! Having installed the latest version, I now get a message window saying: 'Your Preferences cannot be read. Some features may be unavailable and changes to preferences won't be saved'.
I don't get this problem with either Firefox or Internet Explorer browsers. I have uninstalled Chrome with Revo uninstaller and re-loaded it (after re-booting my PC), but still get the same message window coming up when I start Chrome.
How can I fix it so that I can save my preferences and eliminate the message window?
